〈우리 문화의 뿌리를 찾아서The Spirit of Korean Cultural Roots〉 시리즈 29번째 책인『한국의 족보』의 영어판으로, 족보의 기원과 종류, 구성, 기능 등 족보에 대한 총체적인 내용을 담고 있다. 특히 족보가 갖는 역사적, 사회적 의미에 주목하여 족보가 단지 한 집안의 혈연관계를 나타내는 사적인 기록물이 아니라 당시의 시대상 · 사회상을 반영하는 귀중한 역사 자료임을 밝히고 있다는 점이 특징이다. 조선 태조의 호적을 비롯해 족보와 관련 있는 귀중한 사진 자료와 도판을 다양하게 수록함으로써 독자들의 이해를 돕고 있다. 총 4장으로 구성되어 있는 이 책의 1장에서는 족보란 무엇인지, 족보는 어떻게 출현하게 되었으며 어떠한 기능을 하는지에 대해 알아본다. 2장에서는 성씨와 본관이 발생한 과정, 왕족에서 천민에 이르기까지 각 계층별 족보, 창씨개명을 강요했던 일제강점기의 족보 등을 살펴보면서 족보의 역사를 설명한다. 3장에서는 족보의 종류와 구성, 제작 과정을 소개하고, 이와 더불어 기록 과정에서 나타날 수 있는 조작의 사례도 언급하고 있다. 마지막으로 4장에서는 족보를 보는 방법을 일러주고, 외국 족보의 예와 사진 족보 및 영상 족보처럼 시대에 맞게 변화하는 현대의 족보를 소개한다. Korean Genealogical Records is the 29th volume of The Spirit of Korean Cultural Roots series. It is a comprehensive introduction to the origin, types, composition and function of Korean genealogical records, shedding light on their significance as valuable material for research into ancient periods and the pedigrees of individual families and clans. The text is complemented by many photographs of important historical objects, including the family registration of King Taejo of the Joseon Dynasty, and diagrams and tables to assist the reader’s understanding. The book consists of four chapters. Chapter I defines genealogical records and explains the process of their emergence and their roles in traditional society; Chapter II traces the history of genealogical records, the development of family names and clan hometowns, genealogies of different social classes from the royal family to commoners, and the forcible adoption of Japanese names during the colonial period; Chapter III discusses the types, composition and production process of genealogical records, and social implications of fabricated genealogies; and Chapter IV offers guidance on how to read genealogical records, comparable records in other countries, and the evolution of genealogical records in the modern era.
